Harnessing the power of the force to save one special girl. STAR WARS CHALLENGE #ARIASNEWHOPE
Arias story is one no parent ever wants to be part of, she walks a tight rope metabolically every moment of every day. The prognosis is very bleak. Her disease is going to shut down her organs one by one, without us finding a cure.
Aria has a very rare mitochondria disease, meaning she is the only one living with this life limiting condition. There are currently no cures without us privately funding critical medical research.
In every Star Wars movie we have our heroes. We hope to find our Skywalkers, Organas and Solos to help us find a cure for Aria. And we'll put ourselves through 26 hours of Galactic Empire torture to find them! This will be worse than a Darth Vader Force Choke!
Why a Star Wars Challenge?
By chance or by fate we found a link between the mitochondria disease that Aria is living with and the midichlorians that allow certain beings from the Star Wars universe to use the force.
It's believed that George Lucas developed the concept of midichlorians in 1977. In an interview with Paul Duncan for the Star Wars archives, Lucas states:
Midi-chlorians are the equivalent of mitochondria in living organisms and photosynthesis in plants - I simply combined them for easier consumption by the viewer. Mitochondria create the chemical energy that turns one cell into two cells.
Without Lucas awareness and understanding of the importance of mitochondria in life, maybe he wouldn't have developed the concept of the force...and without the concept of the force would Star Wars have lived so long in our hearts?
So as Star Wars fans what better cause to support than a deeper understanding of mitochondria, a deeper understanding that isn't just about saving Aria, but also about understanding and battling other mitochondria diseases such as Parkinson's, Alzheimers and many more.
We need a community to give Aria her new hope
We also chose a Star Wars challenge as we realised that to save Aria we wouldn't be able to do it alone. With limited personal finances and no access to high net worth donors the only chance we have in raising the significant funds to save Aria was by looking for the support of an engaged and passionate community. Can you get a bigger or more passionate community than Star Wars fans? The Swifties don't even come close!
With a community of hundreds of millions - there are more than 102 million Star Wars fans in the US alone...that's more than the population of Germany!! If we can spread the message of Aria even the smallest of donations from each Star Wars fan will allow us to reach out target and exceed it by millions allowing for further research in the field of mitochondria diseases.
You love Star Wars...so how is watching a Star Wars movie marathon a challenge worth supporting?
Chris, Adi and Neil love Star Wars, so how is this a challenge? Surely watching 11 Star Wars movies back to back is every Star Wars fans dream? But think about it....too much of a good thing can go terribly wrong!!
Imagine having your love for Star Wars tainted with the torturous task of watching every single amazing minute without break...without sleep...this could lead each of us to the dark side...could the unthinkable happen and we fall out of love with such a cherished childhood memory?!
We are willing to risk losing something precious to us so Arias family don't have to. Support us in making sure our challenge isn't in vain.
As a Star Wars fan what can you do?
We need to raise a minimum of £250,000. This sounds a lot, but if you think the Star Wars community has an active fan base of a few hundred million the figure needed to save Aria feels within our grasp...with your help.
We are asking for two things from the Star Wars community. First, if you could donate as little as £5 to the challenge and Aria, the cost of a large coffee or small beer, Secondly, and probably the most important, we are asking that you share our challenge with your friends and family. Tag them. Tell them. Share our Star Wars challenge far and wide across the galaxy.
Interested to join us or find out more?
If Arias story and our challenge has touched your heart you may feel you want to do more than just donate...you may want to join us in our challenge or find out more about Aria and our task ahead. And of course we would love that!!!
Do your own Star Wars movie marathon with your friends and family and share Arias story.
Donate Star Wars memorabilia which we will auction live during our Star Wars movie marathon.
We'll give shout outs to companies that support us throughout our live stream and social updates throughout the challenge.
